Champions League: Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund

Champions-LeagueThe Champions League returns to Wembley on Saturday 25th May as last year’s beaten finalists Bayern Munich take on 1997 winners Borussia Dortmund in the final – and we’ve got a fantastic free bet offer to add to the excitement.

It's hard to say considering both teams have several players who have the ability to change a game with one moment of magic. This fixture will definitely be one to remember. Not only are these two teams battling to decide who is the best in Europe, but to decide who is the best in Germany.

Winning the Bundesliga has been a walk in the park for Bayern Munich this season. They lead all opposition by an astonishing 20 points. Dortmund have had a solid campaign in the league but not nearly as impressive as Bayern.

Bayern have not only excelled in the league, but their results in the Champions League have also been extraordinary. Bayern Munich knocked out former Champions League favourites Barcelona, wiping the floor with them in the process.

Following a 4-0 thrashing, some believed it was possible for the Spanish giants to make a magnificent comeback at the Camp Nou in order to reach the final. Instead, Bayern performed just as majestically as they did in the first leg and beat them 3-0.

Overall, the aggregate score was 7-0 to Bayern Munich. This sort of result is rare for an incredible Barcelona team, but Bayern went the extra mile. They are desperate to win what they came so close to winning last year. The delicate and exquisite footwork and pace of Arjen Robben annihilated Barcelona. I'm sure he will be hoping to do the same to Dortmund too.

Bayern definitely have the potential to be crowned Europe's top team. They had the potential last year but failed to do what was needed. Will they use last year's heartache to spur them on this year?

Borussia Dortmund are a superb side built off of youthful prodigies and breathtaking teamwork. Although they have not performed as well in the Bundesliga, they have been terrific in all stages of the Champions League.

Like Bayern, Dortmund managed to eliminate a very difficult semi-final opponent in style. Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid fought back at the Bernabeu, but could not complete the comeback needed to outclass the 4-1 victory Lewandowski provided on German soil.

Up until the second leg of the semi-final, Borussia Dortmund were undefeated. Using their young and ambitious stars, they managed to pull off exceptional performances in every stage of the competition. Marcos Reus, Mari Gotze and Lewandowski are the most well-known of the Dortmund squad, but every player has played their part in what has been a remarkable campaign.

Bayern Munich are going to have to been on top form to defeat this determined side. The last time the two played, the result was 1-1. Borussia Dortmund have only reached the final once before, and they won. Will they go two for two?

As Lionel Messi and Ronaldo stay at home to watch the final, the two best teams in Germany will fight relentlessly until the final whistle. Both teams could pull off that magical Champions League performance in order to win it all.

Will it be Robben and Bayern Munich or Lewandowski and Borussia Dortmund? May 25 is going to be a historical and memorable date - and what a day for German football.

Klopp: Dortmund still not favourites

Jurgen-Klopp-2A rampant Borussia Dortmund are by no means favourites to reach the Champions League final despite their crushing 4-1 win against nine-times winners Real Madrid.

Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski became the first player to score four goals in a Champions League semi-final as the Germans produced a stunning display of attacking football in the home first leg.
Klopp played down his team's performance, saying pre-tie underdogs Dortmund had done nothing more than win the first of two games. The return is at the Bernabeu on Tuesday.
"The problem is that we have played only two quarters. We still have to play the other two quarters," said Klopp, whose team are undefeated in the competition this season.
"I was happy for our very good game but I do not think we are favourites. If we lose 3-0 then we are out. To squander such a good result would be silly but nothing has been decided.
"We feel just like deserved semi-finalists. Nothing is decided and we have not too much experience at this stage."
Dortmund only reached the last four after a late two-goal burst in the quarter-final second leg against Malaga.
Klopp: Dortmund despite losing at least one key player per season, had managed to remain a tightly-knit team which enjoyed playing together.
Mario Goetze, who created the first goal, is the next to leave after agreeing to join rivals Bayern Munich in July in a deal which angered Dortmund fans when announced on Tuesday.
"If you play football you know how to handle this situation," he said, adding fears of possible jeers and whistles from fans towards the Germany midfielder had proved unfounded.
"You cannot be successful and nobody will recognise it. It's normal to see players go. Each year we lost one brilliant player. We got better and better and better. It's no problem in the team.
"It is not easy but it's the mentality of the team to enjoy each day we are together and we will see what will be there at the end of the season."
Charismatic Klopp refused to analyse how he had stifled Real, preferring to talk about his exploits as a second division striker 25 years ago.
"I will not talk about tactics today as we need to play them again. I can say we scored great goals but that's it. I don't want to talk details because if we had a good idea that worked for us tonight I would like to keep it for me," he smirked.
Klopp was full of praise for striker Lewandowski before delivering a trademark joke.

Bayern stun Barca with four-goal show

Bayern-BarcelonaBayern Munich's incredible season continued when they handed Barcelona one of their heaviest defeats for years, hammering the Catalans 4-0 in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday.

Thomas Muller headed the recently-crowned Bundesliga champions ahead in the 25th minute and Mario Gomez turned in the second goal amid suspicions of offside early in the second half.

Arjen Robben added a third in the 73rd minute and Muller then grabbed his second of the night as Barca collapsed dramatically in a game where Lionel Messi, returning from a hamstring injury, made little impact.
In doing so, Bayern avenged their defeat by the same score in the quarter-finals four years ago.
Robben nearly put Bayern ahead in the third minute after a clever backheel by Javi Martinez gave him a clear scoring chance but he shot straight at keeper Victor Valdes.
Barca then put together some intricate passing moves although they rarely threatened to score and Bayern had the next chance when a goalbound Philipp Lahm shot was blocked by defender Gerard Pique.
Pique also appeared to handle when he cleared the resulting corner but the referee was not interested.
It was not long before Bayern, who won the Bundesliga with six games to spare, went ahead with the help of an overhit corner by Franck Ribery.
His effort found Robben on the other side of the penalty area and a rare right-footed cross from the Dutchman found Dante whose header fell for Mueller to stoop and score.
Barca's most dangerous first-half effort was a low Pedro cross which Dante was lucky not to turn into his own net.
Bayern extended their lead from another corner as Mueller at the back post headed back into the middle for Gomez to turn the ball in at close range after 49 minutes although he may have been fractionally offside.
The Germans threatened another as shots from Mueller and Ribery flashed wide and then Robben headed wide from a free kick.
Barca, often reduced to long balls forward, managed to impose some of their possession football but were vulnerable on the break.
Robben exploited the gaps when he burst down the right for the third and, with Barca still reeling, Mueller blasted a David Alaba pass into the net for the fourth goal.

Mourinho and Madrid roused for Galatasaray visit

José-MourinhoWhile José Mourinho does not expect Real Madrid CF to lack for motivation, Fatih Terim wants Galatasaray "to overcome their limits and keep on growing" once again.

Wednesday's UEFA Champions League quarter-final meeting of Real Madrid and Galatasaray brings together several past acquaintances; not only are José Mourinho and Fatih Terim old friends but the Madrid coach has also enjoyed considerable success with players in the opposing ranks. While Mourinho does not expect his team to be short of motivation, Terim is urging Galatasaray to "overcome their limits" once again.

Real Madrid

José Mourinho, coach
It is important we score the goals to win this game, and who does that is not important. When you have great players you always expect big things of them. If you look at the United game, [Gonzalo] Higuaín did not score but he played a great game which is what is important – that the players do well for the team.

We have our objectives for tomorrow but so do they. I want to win, they want to win. [Wesley] Sneijder and [Didier] Drogba have been important players for me in the past but tomorrow they will be my friends, not players in my team. Drogba was a great player for me, a great friend and someone that will stay in my life forever. We created emotional links that go beyond football.

Galatasaray have a great coach with experience at this level and so he feels comfortable. He is not afraid of playing here. He has players who have played in the best teams in the world, players who are calm when it comes to the quarter-finals of this competition. Drogba, Sneijder and Burak [Yılmaz] could play for any team in the world.

There is no bigger motivation than getting to a semi-final; the only motivation that beats it is to get to the final. We know the history of Madrid in this competition. We also know that recently Madrid have not had so much success. I do not see my team better [or worse] than last year. There were very few things we could have improved on after going out in the semi-finals last season. We are arriving with no players injured, everyone fit.

I do not like talking about favourites at this stage of the tournament. When I got here with Porto and Inter they were not favourites and they won it. With Madrid, we got here before and did not win it. It is difficult for me to talk about favourites for that reason.

Galatasaray

Fatih Terim, coach
When the draw was made, we drew a team whose goal it is to win the trophy. Madrid have some of the most important players and maybe the best coach in the world. Our goal is to continue our work and to gain respect. We know very well who we are facing but in the Champions League we have already proved our strength and belief.

We will have a great game regardless of the result. We are not worried; we will do our best. I hope we play two great games. Madrid at home are very effective. They have achieved great success in this stadium. They have one of the most dangerous and powerful players in the world: Ronaldo.

We have got the most difficult opponents available. This is not an excuse though. If I were the coach of any of the other seven teams I would also have asked to be drawn against Galatasaray. Yet we must look at what we have done in this competition up until now.

I trust in my team and in my players. We came from a group including Manchester United and then knocked out Schalke so we've fought very hard and will continue to do that. We know what we are capable of.

We are looking at what we can do against Madrid. We are going to run and to try to play an attractive game. Madrid play the same way home and away – we can call it the Real Madrid level – and both matches will be difficult.

We have never given up before a game and we have achieved significant results with this attitude. We want to go back to Istanbul with an advantage. These kind of games are open to all possibilities. If we lose it wouldn't be a surprise but if we win it would be.

We are going there with the idea of pushing every limit. I have never told my players that one goal is enough. I always tell them to overcome their limits, to keep on growing. We have knocked out big teams. Our players have already tasted victory. They know what it will take to qualify for the next round but if we lose we will have done so against very respected opponents.

Málaga and Dortmund expect open encounter

manuel-pellegriniThere was mutual praise between the coaches of Málaga CF and Borussia Dortmund ahead of their first leg, with Manuel Pellegrini predicting "a great game" at La Rosaleda.

The coaches of Málaga CF and Borussia Dortmund celebrated the achievements of their respective sides in reaching the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals – and each believes Wednesday's meeting in Spain will be an entertaining encounter. While Manuel Pellegrini wants Málaga to keep their hopes alive for next week's return trip to Germany, Jürgen Klopp is urging his charges to seize "a great opportunity".

Málaga

Manuel Pellegrini, coach
Nobody gave us a chance at the start of this campaign, but the players have responded so well. We eliminated Porto and that represented a huge achievement for the side. Any plaudits this season have been won out on the pitch. Both teams like to have the ball and are very powerful. I am delighted to be playing Dortmund, as creative as they are. The fans will see a great game.

Dortmund have a great side – they are current Bundesliga champions and have five players who start for the German national team. They have huge potential, are very creative in midfield, but I think their main strength is in attack. We will try to minimise their strengths while playing to ours.

What I do know is that it is so important to get a good result to take into the away leg. This tie will be played over 180 minutes and the first 90 will be played at home, where we have to neutralise their game and try to impose ours. However, the outcome will most likely be decided in Dortmund.

Dortmund

Jürgen Klopp, coach
We have seen and analysed a lot of Málaga games. They've been doing really well and are an experienced team with strong defensive and offensive systems. The tie is open, it's a great opportunity, and we are happy to play Málaga.

We've played well in this season's Champions League and we want to produce more good performances. We can't say we will be disappointed if Málaga beat us – the name of the opposition doesn't matter, because Málaga are a very good side and Manuel Pellegrini is an excellent coach. We are concentrated on this game.

We don't think about how young Isco [20] and Mario Götze [20] are. Isco is an excellent player, and both are really very good. The teams also have other good players but not as young as those two.

Many teams have been eliminated, and Málaga and ourselves are still involved. There will be good games in these quarter-finals but I think this will be one of the best matches in the competition. The most important game of the season is this one. We want to reach the semi-finals, so let's see what happens.

Leonardo relishing Barca test - Bet on Champions League

carlo-ancelotti-2Leonardo has predicted "a celebration of football" when Paris Saint-Germain take on Barcelona in a Champions League last-eight double header.

The French powerhouses emerged top of Group A ahead of FC Porto and on Wednesday came through a difficult round of 16 assignment against Valencia to go through to the quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate.
It means the Ligue 1 title-chasers now face the unenviable task of denying Barcelona a place in the last four. PSG are quoted 41.00 to win Europe's elite club competition, with the runaway La Liga leaders priced 2.50.
PSG sporting director Leonardo added: "It is the most difficult draw against the best team in the competition. It won't be easy, but we are looking forward to it because Paris deserves to be part of what will be a celebration of football. We can measure ourselves against one of the greatest sides of all time. Barcelona are red-hot favourites, but anything can happen."
Barca clinically overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit to thump AC Milan 4-0 at Camp Nou in midweek, but two-time competition winner Carlo Ancelotti warned his players will not roll over.
"It's magnificent, we are delighted with the draw," he said. "We know it will be very difficult, but this will be a great test for us. Along with Real Madrid, they are competition favourites. They just have so many qualities - but we'll have our say."

Kroos wary of Old Lady - Bet on Champions League

toni-kroosToni Kroos and Arjen Robben have agreed being paired with Juventus in the Champions League quater-finals is the "toughest draw" for Bayern Munich.

The Bundesliga leaders made it to the last eight of Europe's premier club competition on the away goals rule having sent Premier League top-four chasers Arsenal packing.
Next up the Bavarian giants will host the Serie A leaders in the first leg on 2nd April, with the return taking place eight days later in Turin, Italy. Bayern can be backed at 5.50 to win the competition, with Antonio Conte's Scudetto-chasers quoted 15.00.
The Old Lady emerged from Group E without being beaten and took four points off last year's winner Chelsea.
"Juventus eliminated last year's Champions League winners," said Germany international Kroos. "After Barcelona, they are the toughest draw for us. We need to produce top performances against them in order to prevail. It would be ideal to keep a clean sheet at home."
Netherland winger Robben agreed Jupp Heynckes' men, beaten in the final on penalties on home soil by Chelsea last year, face a difficult double header.
He added: "Juve won't give us many chances and it will be a very difficult task for us. They have a lot of well-known players and [Andrea] Pirlo is still one of the best in the world."

Wenger aims for Munich miracle - champions league bet tips

arsene-wenger-3Arsene Wenger insists everything is possible as Arsenal step up their preparations for the Champions League last-16 second leg clash at Bayern Munich.

The Gunners lost last month's first leg at the Emirates Stadium to the runaway Bundesliga leaders 3-1 and are 26.00 to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Bayern, 4.50 to win this season's Champions League, are in outstanding form, and were a little unlucky not to beat Wenger's team even more convincingly in north London.
However, Wenger is refusing to give up hope, even though his side now look certain to endure another trophy-less season and are only 2.62 to clinch a top-four spot in the Premier League this term.
Arsenal will be without England midfielder Jack Wilshere for the second leg as the influential midfielder has an ankle injury, while goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has not travelled to Germany.
Wenger said: "Football is football - everything is possible. It is a difficult task, we know that, but we think it is not impossible. The only way to make it possible is to have a real go and play at our best. I am confident we will be completely focused and up for it.
"I am convinced that if this team can find a big game, with a big win, you will see a completely different animal. This season we have fought to find that in the big games and we have another opportunity and I hope the team takes this chance.
"I have a great respect for this team and its attitude and they have not been rewarded yet. It is important for the end to our season that we do it here."

Lennon looks to salvage some pride - champions league bet tips

Gary Hooper will be keen to get among the goals in the second leg.

Gary-HooperCeltic manager Neil Lennon accepts that the pressure is off his side as they prepare for Today's Champions League clash in Turin against Juventus.

The runaway SPL leaders crashed to a 3-0 home defeat in the first leg of their last-16 clash last month, but Lennon hopes his team can salvage some pride in the second game and has not ruled out the possibility of his side winning in Italy.
Celtic are 10.00 to win the second leg, with Gary Hooper available at 10.00 to open the scoring, while Juventus can be backed at 10.00 to win this season's Champions League.
Lennon said: "We're capable of winning the game and that's what we'd like to do. The pressure's really off. We'll try to restore some respectability in the tie. However, to qualify would take a minor miracle.
"Trying not to concede a goal after two or three minutes would help and get a foothold in the game. If we can create as many chances as we did at Celtic Park then we should have a great night.
"We've got plenty of players who can give Juventus a problem but we need to start the game well."
Celtic will be without injured trioTony Watt, Scott Brown and Mikael Lustig, but Charlie Mulgrew travelled to Italy after missing the last three games with a muscle problem.

Chiellini warns of Juve complacency - champions league bet tips

giorgio-chielliniJuventus central defender Giorgio Chiellini has warned his side not to think that it is already job done against Celtic in the Champions League.

Juve romped to a 3-0 win in the first leg of their last-16 tie at Parkhead last month, but Chiellini says that there is still 'much to do' in the return in Turin on Today evening.
"We should not delude ourselves qualification is in our pocket," Chiellini said. "To win 3-0 in Glasgow was a great team performance, but we know we still need to be at our best today.
"In football, you should never think you have won before you play the game. We had a good result in the first leg, but everything can change. We are taking nothing for granted."
Chiellini, who missed the first leg in Glasgow, is a doubt for the Turin return as he continues to be troubled by an ankle problem.
Juve are 1.36 to win the second leg on home turf and 1.001 to secure a quarter-final spot, while they are 10.00 to go on and win the Champions League.
Celtic will head to Italy shorn of the services of skipper Scott Brown, defender Mikael Lustig and young striker Tony Watt, who made his name earlier on this season by scoring the clincher in a 2-1 group stage win over Barcelona.

Maxwell expects European progress - champions league bet tips

Maxwell is backing Paris Saint-Germain to progress in Europe.

maxwellParis Saint-Germain full-back Maxwell does not expect their shock defeat against Reims to derail their bid to reach the last-eight of the Champions League.

The big-spendng French Ligue 1 leaders, who have been heavily backed by their Qatari owners in the transfer market, were stunned away from home on Saturday ahead of Wednesday's last-16 second leg tie against Valencia at the Parc de Princes.
However, former Barcelona star, Maxwell, is confident that there will be no negative impact on the players as they lead 2-1 from the first leg in Spain and look in the box seat to make it through to the quarter-finals.
He said: "I don’t think the defeat to Reims will be a problem because everyone is focused on Europe.
"This competition is very important and we will be giving everything to try and win it."
Paris Saint-Germain, who are are 1.11 to qualify thanks to the away goals scored by Ezequiel Lavezzi and Javier Pastore, can be backed at 1.95 to win in 90 minutes on Wednesday, while Valencia are 4.20 to win on the night and 7.00 to qualify for the last-eight.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti will be without star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who begins a two-match European ban handed down for his sending-off towards the end of the first leg, while Italian midfielder Marco Verratti is also banned. And that could see David Beckham given his first Champions League start for the club.

Soccer - Benitez eyes massive win

Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez has urged his side to secure a victory at home to fifth-placed Spurs on Wednesday to all but ensure a top-four finish and Champions League football next season. The Blues are 10/11 with bet365 to triumph at Stamford Bridge and move six points clear of Spurs with just two subsequent games to play, with Chelsea desperate to return to Champions League action after winning the trophy last season. A greatly superior goal difference means that a victory would all but secure a top-four spot for the Blues, with Benitez well aware of the importance of the derby clash. "If we can win we will be there, but Tottenham are a good team and it will be a final for the top four," Benitez told the club's official website. "Winning is crucial for us, it's even more important for them. We will try to win because we know it will guarantee a top-four finish."

Rugby Union - Moody: Lions win a must

Former England captain Lewis Moody says that the British & Irish Lions have to win their series in Australia for it to be considered a success. The Lions are 8/11 with bet365 to win the three-match series Down Under, with Moody feeling that the pressure will be on Warren Gatland's touring party. However, Moody has also backed the Lions to win their first three-match series since a 2-1 triumph in South Africa back in 1997. Moody warned: "He (Gatland) has to win. You look back on any Lions tour that have gone in the past, what do you consider a success? We only look at the winning tours, it's as simple as that. "Are we going to win it? Yes we are. We certainly have the players to do so and I think Australia aren't the team that they used to be." The first Test takes place at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday 22nd June.

Soccer - Michu misses key Wigan clash

Wigan Athletic can move out of the Premier League relegation zone with a win at home to Swansea City on Tuesday, and the visitors will be without leading scorer Michu for the game. The Spaniard has scored 17 top-flight goals in his first season in England, but is unlikely to feature again this term due to a hamstring problem. This news will come as a major boost to the Latics, who are 4/5 with bet365 to win the clash at the DW Stadium and move out of the bottom three with just two subsequent games to play. However, Wigan have injury problems of their own, with a groin injury meaning that left-back Maynor Figueroa is unlikely to play again this season, while Jean Beausejour suffered a hamstring problem in the 3-2 win at West Brom at the weekend. Better news comes with Antolin Alcaraz likely to be fit after hamstring trouble of his own to bolster a Latics backline which has not kept a clean sheet in their last five games.
